In 1959 South Korea was mired in poverty. By 1979 it had a powerful industrial economy and a vibrant civil society in the making, which would lead to a democratic breakthrough eight years later. The transformation took place during the years of Park Chung Hee’s presidency. Park seized power in a coup in 1961 and ruled as a virtual dictator until his assassination in October 1979. He is credited with modernizing South Korea, but at a huge political and social cost.

South Korea’s pol! itical landscape under Park defies easy categorization. The state was predatory yet technocratic, reform-minded yet quick to crack down on dissidents in the name of political order. The nation was balanced uneasily between opposition forces calling for democratic reforms and the Park government’s obsession with economic growth. The chaebol (a powerful conglomerate of multinationals based in South Korea) received massive government support to pioneer new growth industries, even as a nationwide campaign of economic shock therapyâ€"interest hikes, devaluation, and wage cutsâ€"met strong public resistance and caused considerable hardship.

This landmark volume examines South Korea’s era of development as a study in the complex politics of modernization. Drawing on an extraordinary range of sources in both English and Korean, these essays recover and contextualize many of the ambiguities in South Korea’s trajectory from poverty to a sustainable high rate of economic g! rowth.

A MASTERPIECE THEATRE PRESENTATION and AWARD WINNING DRAMA

Notorious. Scandalous. Unforgettable!

She is a lover, a criminal and a master of disguise who lives life on her own lusty terms. Acclaimed actress Alex Kingston ("Dr. Elizabeth Corday" of television's ER) stars as Daniel Defoe's notorious heroine in this scandalous romp set in the 18th Century!

Ever since her birth in Newgate Prison, Moll has survived by her cunning, wit and considerable powers of seduction. She goes through five husbands and countless lovers to escape a life on the streets. In betw! een using and deceiving her besotted paramours, she is not above picking a pocket or two! All the while, though, her heart belongs to the charismatic Jemmy (Daniel Craig). Inevitably, even the most clever criminal's luck runs out and Moll is soon facing the hangman's noose. As her execution day approaches, she devises one last desperate ploy to save not only her own neck, but also the life of her one true love.

This energetic, sardonic, and richly funny adaptation of Daniel Defoe's classic novel is completely unlike what you might expect from genteel Masterpiece Theatre. The heroine, Moll Flanders (Alex Kingston), after being born in prison, wends her way through the top and bottom of 18th-century English society, has five husbands (including a roguish highwayman who becomes the love of her life), many lovers (male and female), travels to America and back again, and in general discovers all that is cruel and sweet in life. Kingston tears into her role with ! gleeful amorality and delicious charm, often turning to the ca! mera wit h a seductive smile to ask, "What would you do?" This British miniseries is brilliantly written, skillfully directed, and superbly acted all around (with particularly delightful performances by Diana Rigg and Daniel Craig)--in short, among the best of its kind; both a cunning examination of social morés and a hugely entertaining story. Not to be missed. --Bret Fetzer

As Seen on Masterpiece Theatre

It is the first century A.D. and the Romans have invaded ancient Britain, but the Iceni, a Celtic tribe, are unwilling to live as a subject race in their own land. For a while, they are allowed to continue their lives as usual, without Rome's interference, but when Emperor Claudius dies, the Romans and the new Emperor Nero no longer tolerate the Iceni way of life and endeavor to crush the upstart Queen Boudicca (Alex Kingston - ER, Moll Flanders) and her tribe. However, they have underestimated the Celtic spirit and, seeking revenge, Boudicca l! eads her people against the mighty Romans with devastating effect.

From the stylish avenues of Manhattan and dark clubs of the French Quarter to the bright lights of Los Angeles, the multitalented Nicole Richie’s scintillating tale shows that the very life you run from is the one that won’t let you hide.

In her electrifying first novel, Nicole Richie tells the sensational story of Chloe Parker, a rock! royalty princess and a card-carrying member of Hollywood's in! ner circ le. At the age of seven, Chloe was adopted by a music superstar and his wife, transforming her life from rags to riches. What followed was a wild childhood distinguished by parties with movie stars and rock idols, run-ins with the press and the police, and a subsequent stint in rehab.

Suddenly Chloe shoots to instant fame as a spokesmodel for a national ad campaign. When her long-lost birth father appears out of nowhere and her best friend betrays her, she must struggle to keep it all together -- her sobriety, her friendships, and her integrity despite the betrayals of those around her. Ultimately, Chloe comes spectacularly into her own, achieving stardom in her own right and finding true love.

Through the eyes of the captivating Chloe and the talented voice of Nicole Richie, we are given a no-holds-barred look at Hollywood's new elite, behind the velvet ropes, inside star-studded premieres and parties. Whether they're doing the "circuit" (begin with shoppi! ng at Barneys New York, Marni, and Fred Segal, then end with the grilled vegetable salad at the Ivy), or ending up on the front page of your favorite weekly magazine, Chloe Parker and her fellow A-listers never fail to dazzle, their larger-than-life dramas more riveting than any reality show.

This collection of pieces is arranged using a series of 12 repeated questions, such as "How will you begin?" "Describe a morning you woke without feat?" and "Who was responsible for the suffering of your mother?" The manuscript is set in diverse places - Punjab, Afghanistan, Central America, England, Arizona - where the meditations on the 'interrogations' considered by the narrator are described in language that is segmented and seeking.

These short pieces reveal new ways of belonging in the world and possibilities for an art grounded in a 'localized' cosmopolitan culture.

With globalization fast becoming an irreversible process, it is necessary to pay increased attention to the implications for environmental sustainability. Some commentators have uncritically assumed that globalization would result in all-round prosperity! whereas the opposing view holds that in order to sustain growth and consumption, a certain threshold level of per capita income should be attained - the so-called environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) argument. This argument implies that rapid economic growth in many developing countries should be environmentally unsustainable.

Environmental Sustainability addresses this dichotomy and articulates a notion of consumption sustainability that is both universal and pertains to the indefinite future. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of addressing a broad spectrum of sources of environmental degradation and relates this measure to an index of economic achievement more complete than per capita income. The EKC conclusion is examined and is demonstrated to be untenable, it is argued that there is scope to permit developing countries to target high rates of economic growth and that lowering rich countries' consumption would be consistent with environmental s! ustainability.

Jha and Murthy critique the Environ! mental S ustainability Index (ESI), which has been proposed as a measure of the overall state of the environment and advance an alternative methodology for computing environmental sustainability. The authors empirically substantiate the proposition that a certain type of development in the presently high-income countries is primarily responsible for global environmental degradation. Several policy conclusions for global environmental management are also advanced.
